Historically, eating disorders were seen to be specific to females. Over the years it’s been realised that eating disorders can occur across the age and the gender spectrum though the predominant age spectrum continues to be teens and young adults.
Eating disorders can be of various kinds:
1. Anorexia nervous: It is characterised by distorted body image, an intense pursuit of thinness and an associated fear of gaining weight. The individuals place significant importance on controlling their weight by using extreme efforts like restricting the amount of food being eaten, excessive exercise etc. that tend to negatively affect their health and their lives.
2. Bulimia nervous: It is characterised by recurrent episodes of binge eating, followed by purging behaviours examples. Individuals may experience a sense of shame, guilt and fear of weight gain post-binge. Usually, individuals with this disorder maintain a relatively normal weight.
3. Binge eating disorder: It is characterised by recurrent episodes of eating excessive amounts of food in a short period, often to the point of feeling uncomfortably full or experiencing physical pain.
Eating disorders are associated with significant distress impairment in psychosocial and are known to cause multiple physical health conditions.
