What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that impacts every aspect of a person’s life, and close to 2.4 crore people in the world suffer from this condition. Yet the myths and misconceptions that surround schizophrenia have always been a significant barrier to seeking treatment for this illness.
At Adayu, we believe in evidence-based, timely intervention while protecting the rights and dignity of patients. We offer residential treatment for patients with schizophrenia during acute phases of the illness, which may at times be difficult to manage at home. With the right treatment, patients with schizophrenia can go on to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. In this journey, we also support family members as they care for their loved ones.
Understanding schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental illness characterized by a disconnect with reality, abnormal thinking, perceptions, emotions, and behaviour. People with schizophrenia often experience hallucinations (sensory experiences that are not real) and delusions (false beliefs that are not based in reality). Schizophrenia typically begins in late adolescence or early adulthood. Its causes are not yet fully understood, but genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors are believed to play a role.
Treatment Journey
Hospitalization for schizophrenia aims at providing a safe and supportive environment where you can receive intensive treatment and round the clock care as your condition stabilizes. Our holistic intervention program is designed not just to ameliorate symptoms but also promote lasting recovery by reducing chances of relapse and improving overall quality of life.
Initial Assessment: Treatment at Adayu begins with an in-depth clinical evaluation that enables us to develop a specialized protocol tailored to your condition. This includes an assessment of your medical condition as well as a comprehensive psychological evaluation that provides key insights into your symptoms and personality functioning.
What is the treatment?
Treatment and stabilization: Medicines form the cornerstone of treatment for schizophrenia. Our team of psychiatrists will ascertain the right medicines and dosage to suit your condition, while also evaluating the side-effect profile. We also offer rTMS treatment, used for specific clinical indications. As the acute symptoms of schizophrenia subside, we will also focus on improving your lifestyle – your sleep cycle, appetite and activities of daily living – to help you take the next steps in your recovery.
Psychotherapy: Beyond symptom relief, we understand the therapeutic value that psycho-social interventions can add to your quality of life. Our team of psychologists take a collaborative approach to psychotherapy, wherein we design an individualized program to ensure the best outcomes. Our eclectic approach to treatment utilizes principles from cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectic behavioural therapy as well as phenomenological and insight oriented approaches. We also use art as a form of psychotherapy to facilitate self-expression and serenity. Cognitive training sessions with our psychologists work on enhancing executive functions which positive impact decision making. Family guidance is also a key pillar of treatment at Adayu, so that your family can be there for you in the way that you need most.
Medical Support: Many patients with schizophrenia may also have other medical concerns. While treating your psychiatry disorder, we will also give importance to your overall health. Our team of doctors and nurses are available 24x7 to manage any medical exigencies that may arise.
Yoga and Meditation: We integrate the wisdom of traditional healing practices with cutting-edge medical science. Our yoga teacher will work with you towards developing your inner strength as you synergize your mind and body. Mindfulness sessions at our zen-garden will reaffirm a sense of connectedness with your environment, and with your true self.
Lifestyle Care: One of the most important elements of treatment for schizophrenia is providing a structured environment that facilitates a secure base. Our in-house physiotherapist will facilitate a regular exercise regimen so you remain physically fit. Wholesome meals will be curated with care by our clinical nutritionist. Regular recreational activities, in the form of reading, art and craft, board games and horticulture will help maintain a day to day routine, keep you mindfully engaged, and most of all, impart learnings from life experiences.
Aftercare
Your path to recovery does not end with hospitalization alone, and neither does our care. As you step back into your everyday life, we will create a collaborative process to ensure aftercare, and act as a bridge to long-term, outpatient care. Our team will be available via our 24x7 emergency services, and for both in-person sessions and via tele-consultations.
