What is Acute Psychological Crisis?
There are times in life when we may experience an acute psychological crisis, which exceeds our capacity to cope. Such a crisis may be the result of a traumatic experience, a mental health disorder or triggered by psychosocial factors in our life. Such situations negatively affect our mood, thoughts and create behavioural distress. They have an overall impact on our functioning, and on our well-being.
Adayu is a safe space where we provide care with compassion. Through our treatment, we offer a holding space where we de-escalate crisis and restore a sense of control and agency. We ensure round-the-clock monitoring and support so you never feel alone.
What is the treatment?
Risk Assessment
Our residential program offers an well-rounded approach to crisis management. Since your physical and psychological safety is our foremost priority, we begin by conducting a risk-assessment to ensure swift stabilization.
Our team will psycho-education you and your family so you can better understand what to expect in your current condition, and how the next steps of treatment will unfold. Understanding your stress responses and being prepared for what to expect are integral component of recovery.
Medications
Basis your condition, our team may prescribe medicines to stabilize acute symptoms of distress, or to begin pharmacological treatment for an underlying mental health disorder. We will also screen for any physical health conditions that may be having an impact. As the acute feelings of distress subside, our focus shifts to restoring your life rhythm – making sure that you are sleeping well, eating well, and participating in activities of everyday living.
Crisis Intervention and Psychotherapy
Crisis intervention is a short-term approach that plays an important role in the immediate aftermath of an event or emotional trigger. The aim of crisis intervention is to provide psychological safety, restore autonomic equilibrium and promote problem solving. Our team will work with you to help you feel more grounded and find healthy ways to cope with the distress.
As your condition begins to stabilize, crisis intervention will give way to psychotherapy – to build resilience and help you cope with future challenges as they may arise. The specific approach to psychotherapy will be tailored to the specific event, your personality dynamics and the underlying mental health condition, if any. Along with conventional talk-therapies, we also offer art therapy for we believe that art transcends the written word and offers insight into the deepest recesses of the mind.
Building Coping Mechanisms
Even as you collaborate with your psychotherapist on building a repertoire of adaptive coping skills, at Adayu, we provide you with an opportunity to first practice these skills in a supportive and structured environment. Develop a healthy routine which includes eating wholesome meals, regular physical exercise and a rejuvenating sleep cycle.
Strengthen the mind-body connection and restore a sense of equilibrium as you practice yoga with a teacher. Learn breathing exercises that can help you relax and stay calm. Practice mindfulness in the midst of nature to keep yourself centred in the present moment. Gently tend to the plants atop our terrace garden as you watch saplings sprout, flowers bloom, and new leaves emerge. There’s no greater testament to resilience than nature itself.
Family Care
A mental health crisis can leave family members feeling bewildered, and ensuring their well-being is just as important to us. Our team will ensure that your loved ones understand what you’re experiencing, what to expect, and how best they can support you in your recovery.
After Care
As you transition back into regular life, our team will ensure that you have the skills required to cope with the stressors that come your way. We will create a follow-up plan in collaboration with you and your family so that this adjustment is seamless. In certain cases, you may be required to continue psychotherapy or pharmacological treatment on an out-patient basis or via tele-consultations.
