Neuromodulation
What is Neuromodulation?
At Adayu, patients can receive neuromodulation treatment using Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), in an effort to provide thoughtful and patient-centered approaches to mental health care. These are safe and non-invasive procedures that target specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation and cognitive thought processes. They are conducted in a safe, relaxed and comfortable environment.
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a well-established treatment method that involves mild magnetic stimuli to specific areas of the brain, primarily those that regulate emotions. During an rTMS session, you are seated comfortably, and a small device is positioned on the scalp. You are fully conscious during a stimulation session, and the feeling is often described as minor head tapping. The duration of each appointment is typically between 20 and 40 minutes, after which one can continue with their day uninterrupted. rTMS is commonly prescribed for individuals who have not sufficiently benefited from antidepressants and is also useful for various other disorders, including the OCD, anxiety disorders, PTSD, addiction, and some chronic pain conditions. The improvements are cumulative and take time over several sessions during which individuals report enhanced moods, more restful sleep, and greater functionality in their day-to-day life.
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a quieter and gentler mode of brain stimulation. This involves placing small pads on the scalp and sending a very low electrical current to specific parts of the brain. It is a simple procedure that lasts for about 20–30 minutes. Individuals may experience a feeling of warmth and tingling in the beginning that goes away quickly. The session allows one to sit and relax comfortably. Its common applications include mild to moderate depression, anxiety, stress-related problems, and problems relating to attention and memory. It is also sometimes used for neurological conditions and chronic pain. Like rTMS, the effects take shape over several sessions and does not interfere with one’s daily routine.
