Binge eating disorder occurs when one eats excessively within a span of 2 hours followed by feeling of guilt and shame. There can be multiple causes for binge eating disorder some of which include low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and emotional distress. Genetic predisposition to binge eating disorder, and certain imbalances in brain chemicals can play a role. Attitudes towards food, stigma around gaining weight, and societal pressures can contribute to the development of binge eating disorder.
